Stunt Scooter Bearings

What are ABEC bearings?

ABEC stands for the Annular Bearing Engineering Committee of the AFBMA (Anti-Friction Bearing Manufacturers Association Inc). The number that usually follows ABEC (i.e. ABEC 5 Bearings ) is the tolerance of the bearing.

The bearings sit inside the wheel and is often given an ABEC rating of between 1-9 with only odd numbers being used. The higher the rating the more precise the bearing is with little space between parts.

Bearings are used in all sorts of everyday items. So what does this mean for scooters, is the higher the rating the faster you can scoot? Well technically yes, if you can reach speeds of over 300 mph but with tricks and stunts being performed on scooters top of the range expensive bearings would just get damaged. Only in ultra high speed items like high speed cars and precision measuring instruments can top end bearings affect performance. However fast you plan to going, speed is affected first and foremost by the choice of lubricant.

A good quality scooter should come with an ABEC bearing rating of 5-7. They don’t cost too much, yet give you some good speeds. If you are told your scooter comes with ABEC bearings of 9, then unless you have paid a fortune for it don’t trust that they are, and unless you were racing the cars around Silverstone, they wouldn’t give you any difference in performance than that of ABEC 5.

What is more important is to regularly grease or oil them. Most lubricants that are applied by the manufactures don’t last very long. If you use good quality oil the bearings will stay running smooth and fast, but will need maintaining more often than if you grease them. Grease is of a thicker consistency than oil, so will last longer around the bearing but some say can affect speed. Proper lubricant can reduce friction and prevent bearing wear so look after your wheels.

Do not use lubricate like WD40. It can make your bearings rust just like getting them wet.

If you grease your bearings without taking them off the wheels be very careful not to get grease on the wheels. Grease can cause your wheels to de-hub. This is the easiest way of greasing your bearings but just be careful!
